Nam Pla Prik (น้ำปลาพริก)
This sauce is so ubiquitous, it’s almost like salt and pepper on the Thai table. Nam pla prik (sometimes also called prik nam pla) is a simple sauce made of chilies and fish sauce, and is commonly served as a dipping sauce alongside crispy fried foods like Thai spring rolls, fried fish, and deep fried okra.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons fish sauce
- 1/2 lime, juiced
- 1 small shallot, sliced or minced
- 1-4 Thai chili peppers, sliced
Method:
Slice chili peppers and shallot and place them in a sauce dish. Add fish sauce and lime juice. You can substitute garlic instead of shallot, and reduce or omit the lime juice if you prefer.
Note: For a vegetarian nam pla prik, you can substitute light soy sauce in place of the fish sauce.
